Donor Services

Who fuels this work?

People like you.  People who see the injustices around them, and want to have a positive, permanent impact.

Headwaters offers a variety of services for people interested in giving for social change:

Individual and family advising

Schedule a meeting with experienced Headwaters staff to gather resources and shape your personal philanthropy program.

Donor advised giving

Headwaters' Donor Advised Giving Program offers a variety of services to help donors advance their philanthropic goals and direct resources to social change.  You can establish a donor advised fund quickly and easily—particularly useful for people who want to transfer assets quickly to receive immediate tax benefits, and then take more time to think about where they ultimately want to give.  Donors can support a variety of different organizations through one security or cash transfer to the donor advised fund.  Through your donor advised fund, you can support groups locally, nationally and internationally. If you wish, you can maintain anonymity for some or all of the gifts advised from your fund.

Headwaters staff will meet with you to discuss your goals and interests, and regularly inform you of the social change work of our grantees and other organizations that match your areas of interest. And you can call upon Headwaters staff for advice and help in identifying and evaluating particular groups or issues.  Once you advise on a gift, we take care of all the administrative work—its quick and simple.  You will also receive reports about the grants made from your fund and the account balance.

Learning first-hand from groups working for change

Headwaters offers a variety of opportunities for donors to learn more about social justice work in Minnesota.  Site visits to groups being considered for a grant provide a great way to learn about a particular organization and about our grantmaking process.  Participating on a grants committee for one grant cycle  gives an in-depth view of our activist advised grantmaking process and the social change criteria used to make grant decisions.  Headwaters staff can also put you in touch with nonprofit groups and other donors who are working on particular social justice issues.

Donor education events

Headwaters offers donor education programs for people who value justice, want to invest in justice and give intentionally and strategically for social change.  These programs provide an opportunity to learn about issues, connect with other progressive donors and explore ways to increase the impact of our giving.
