Allies for Justice 2010
| 2010 Allies for Justice Awards Dinner and Celebration |
Thank you for making our 12th annual Allies for Justice Celebration a great success!
Over 300 people gathered at the Nicollet Island Pavilion May 19 for “the social justice party of the year,” with an outstanding performance by Shá Cage, Wing Young Huie’s University Avenue Project, and 11 awesome honorees! It was a beautiful evening by the river. Thanks to all our sponsors, volunteers, and attendees who came together to raise over $50,000 for social justice organizations in Minnesota! Add to that a $15,000 matching grant, and we had a lot to be grateful for.
Raffle winners included: Mary Moran-Wall of Wine, Kristi Adams-Best of the Twin Cities Entertainment Package, and Mary Keefe-Deluxe Spa Package.
| This Year's Allies for Justice Awardees |
All of the work we do is in partnership with a committed community of nonprofit leaders and donors, working together as allies. Join us Wednesday, May 19 to honor this year’s Allies for Justice Award recipients, chosen because they embody Headwaters’ conviction that, together, we can create social and political conditions that guarantee justice for all.
MOVING JUSTICE FORWARD ON TRANSIT EQUITY
For the first time, the Allies for Justice Awards will honor a group of organizations for their collective impact in the local community. Through their collaboration with each other and numerous other community organizations on Central Corridor Light Rail Transit development in St. Paul, these Headwaters grantees have brought attention to the issues of affordable housing, maintaining bus service in this transit dependent community and, in a recent victory, the need to add stops in three high-density neighborhoods. The ten organizations being recognized for moving forward on transit equity are:
Alliance for Metropolitan Stability
Community Stabilization Project
District 7 Planning Council
Got Voice? Got Power! / Aurora St. Anthony NDC
ISAIAH
Jewish Community Action
JUST Equity
Metropolitan Interfaith Council on Affordable Housing
Somali Action Alliance
TakeAction Minnesota
MOVING JUSTICE FORWARD FROM RONDO TO CAPRI
Carl Griffin is a long-time Headwaters philanthropist and donor activist. Carl’s lifelong commitment to social justice began in the Rondo neighborhood of St. Paul, which was transformed and divided by the building of Interstate 94. As a journalist and as a nonprofit professional, Carl’s career has been rooted in a strong sense of community and citizen engagement. Now a catalyst for change at the Plymouth Christian Youth Center and Capri Theater, Carl is helping to turn the dream of community well-being into a reality for young people in North Minneapolis. He has been actively moving justice forward with his own brand of tithing --supporting Headwaters grantees for over 10 years.
